Covid-19 has impacted our sports in a lot of different ways. Some of those ways are small, like having to wear a mask on the bus or having a shorter season. Other ways have a more significant impact, such as having to quarantine because someone on your team tested positive– or not knowing if you’ll have your sport at all. Covid-19 affects all sports differently, more specifically that each season will look different. Fall sports could be affected differently than winter sports or spring sports.
Due to Covid-19, when riding the bus for sports you must wear a mask unless you are eating or drinking. Similarly, you must also wear a mask while sitting on the bench during a sporting event. Although these are minor changes, they are important. The Covid-19 virus has also caused shortened sports seasons and moved them around. Initially, volleyball and football were planned to occur in the spring, pushing the usual spring sports to the Summer; however, the MSHSL came to a different conclusion and moved them back to the Fall. Because the sports seasons are shortened, there isn’t as much time to prepare for big events such as games or meets.
Covid-19 has affected our sports seasons in multiple ways. Some of them are small and easy to adjust to, like wearing a mask on a bus. In some ways, Covid-19 has a heavier influence, such as having a shorter season, starting later in the year, or not having as much time to prepare for a big event. Despite these changes, our student-athletes are ecstatic to have an opportunity to participate in their sports season, no matter how different it may seem.
