The Morris Area Mock Trial season had come to a close. This was the sixth year that the program was offered at this school. This year’s team was made up of only seniors and freshmen! The team was split equally, with five seniors and five freshmen.
A lot of people don’t know what Mock Trial is. Mock Trial is an activity where students can study a fake case and bring it to court. This year’s case was “Death in the Boundary Waters.” This case was about an investor named Addison Rogers-Nelson, who went on a trip with the founder of the company he was investing in. This founder, Koren Noble, is accused of killing Mr. Rogers-Nelson. It was so much fun to argue both sides of the case. There are so many factors that go into Mock Trial, and it’s great to be challenged. You don’t have to have an interest in being a lawyer to do Mock Trial; anyone can do it! The season is from about November-March. If you have any interest in joining for next year, please contact Heidi Seales with any questions!
Moving on to the 2024-25 season, the team was greatly successful! They didn’t make it to state, as they had the previous two years, but they had a good run! Their regular season record was 3-1, allowing them to move on to round 5. Unfortunately, they lost, so they didn’t advance to state, but the scores were close, and the team did well overall, especially since half of the team was completely new!
Everyone on the team did exceptionally well. Two of the freshmen, Cooper Fluegel and Brianna Tomoson, earned their very first “Outstanding Witness” certificates. After each trial, the teams choose one attorney and one witness from the opposing team as a recognition for their outstanding performance. The seniors on the team ended off the year with amazing accomplishments, too!
Captains Heidi Seales and Nathaniel Hanson have participated in Mock Trial since their freshman year of high school (4 years). Throughout their entire careers, Seales ended up with 13 Outstanding Awards overall, and Hanson finished off with 6 Outstanding Awards. Other seniors, Abigail Alcantar, Thea Kolden, and Aria Chatters, joined during their sophomore year of high school (3 years). Alcantar and Kolden ended their careers with many Outstanding Awards, as well! Alcantar earned five total, and Kolden succeeded with 6. Everyone on the team worked extremely hard and achieved many successes during the season!
